Kidnappings

kIDNAPPINGS

It's been days. You're not even sure what section of Folkmore you're in; there aren't any windows, no sounds or smells. Just this small cell with a (thankfully) enclosed restroom, a bed, and that strange purple shield that feels simultaneously warm and cold whenever you touch it. Or hit it. Or kick it, or try to bash the lid of your toilet tank against in an effort to break through even one of the panels.

As far as kidnappings go this could possibly be worse, but somehow not knowing what's going on is worse. Why the accommodations if whoever this is will just kill you? The food's even kind of good, reminds you of some of the farmers market stalls around Willow's marketplaces. The little drones that zip through the barrier with food containers drop them off kindly before buzzing along their way. Destroying them doesn't do much other than dropping your food on the ground.

But it's still been days. And you're still sitting here on the edge of the bed with nothing more than the clothes on your back to occupy your mind. Imagination's done more with less. Maybe you've managed to strike up a conversation with one of the prison-mates on either side of you; not visible around the walls, but audible for those neighbors nearby.

Finally, when it feels like the cabin fever is going to tear you apart, a voice cuts through the air, emitting from one of the Donatello constructs standing before your cell, seams around its joints as if it were built from alloys but still glowing that same bright purple light as all the hexagonal barriers.

"All right! says the bipedal turtle nerd cheerfully, clapping his hands together. "Your turn. This should be painless, moreso if you don't give me any grief. Should I use the gas or will you just come with me?"

Lab Assault/Investigation

lAB ASSAULT / INVESTIGATION

Most huge occurrences in Folkmore are precluded by instructions from Thirteen; at the very least, some iteration of her will scoop up her precious Star Children to whisk off to relative safety...most of them, at least. The environment-melting events of a few months ago aside, Willow has never been home to any of the typical strange terrors of, say, Cruel Summer or Exile.

The dome doesn't look threatening either. But it does look like it's not supposed to be in the middle of some farmland, and neither do the robots and Donatello-looking purple-light constructs that begin patrolling its perimeter. Curious passers-by will be discouraged from getting to close with a little posturing, but the robots in particular have no qualms roughing anybody up. Individuals who get too curious will be dealt with summarily and without hesitation.

Anyone who has noticed their friends missing for the last week might be more inclined to gain entry, but inside the dome is no more welcoming. More constructs, more robots, and traps that do anything from belch forth poisonous gasses to crush the room's occupants litter the labs floors, walls, and ceilings. The prison cells are deep inside the lab, past all these obstacles, and inside those cells are the missing Star Children.

Deeper still is a curious room with a ring buried in the ground, humming deep as if preparing to shake the entire structure apart. Something about the ring is almost threatening; it's clearly sucking up a lot of power, clearly important and, to anybody who manages to force their way into the room, very clearly booby-trapped.

Memory Traps

mEMORY TRAPS

Perhaps you were minding your business, talking a walk through Gram. Maybe you're enjoying a cup of hot chocolate in Wintermute, cozy by the fire in one of their welcoming taverns. It could even be that you're under the sea in Tides, somehow roped into modeling for another painting, again. You could've known about the kidnappings, about the strange dome that appeared in Willow, and you could've decided that it wasn't any of your business. Or maybe it was just the Fox again, up to her usual tricks and Trials, and you wanted no part of it. But maybe instead you're in the lab, bloodying your knuckles on panels made of light to try and reach one of your friends before the guards catch up to you-

Wherever you are and whatever you're doing, something suddenly makes the hairs on your arms and the back of your neck stand on end.

And then, for some of you, no matter where you are, you're suddenly not there.

The small space, filled with visions and sounds and smells that aren't your own, might remind you of Trial 18 a while back. You were suddenly sucked into a world that wasn't yours that time too, but there had been at least some warning beforehand from Lavender, some instructions with an invitation (and an opportunity to decline). A reward for finding the exit with your guide.

For this...there's nothing. A shimmer in the air around a nearby fellow Star Child, or just that hair-raising sensation. Between blinks you are moved from the familiar to the unfamiliar...or the very, painfully familiar. This is a place made up of memories how the soul perceives them; your own, or those of other Star Children. There's no guidance here, and the places, the events, they feel so vibrant, so visceral that it might be difficult to believe you haven't been sent back home, or mistakenly to someone else's. Something as innocuous as a walk in a park in the middle of the day feels as horrific as a battlefield strewn with bodies, because this is where your (someone's) life was destroyed. That kind of agony leaves a mark on the soul and the memories it carries.

You taste sand in the air on the back of a gargantuan sand steamer, sunlight scorching the deck as you throw yourself behind a bulkhead to avoid a shower of bullets. The cobblestones scrape beneath your boots as you make for The Hanged Man, trying to ignore the sight of the giant chained statues that loomed overhead on your way into Kirkwall. The polished halls of a high-tech building, uniformed schoolchildren of all odd shapes and sizes and colors bumping into you as they hurry to their classes before the final bell. The cold, dark, rocky surface of a planet, its sky above a weak shimmer of grays and ghost-white above a navy backdrop, the stink of sulfur pressed into your nose with every breath.

A small world created within this small pocket, ripped from the essence of a Star Child's soul and memories therein...a small world in which you are now trapped.

You could spend mere hours in these other memories. Maybe days, weeks, months. You might even spend years; reliving them over and over, or experiencing the lives of your friends and family as if you were always there. Maybe, in some cases, you were only a ghost, unseen and unheard by everything and everyone, for years, and years, and years. Perhaps you're ensnared in a battle and run through with a sword, and it feels just like you always thought dying might actually feel. Maybe death is a comfort after everything you've been through. Or, maybe you know this isn't real, or suspect at the very least. Nothing can hurt you.

When you emerge from the world, it has been only seconds.

You're still mid-step in your walk.

Your hot chocolate is still steaming in your grip.

The painting isn't even half-finished.

Whatever you experienced, if it was perceived as real, any wounds and joys and agonies will be inflicted upon your body as it was reflected on your soul. Maybe you're fine; maybe the time spent was calm, serene, comforting. Maybe you thought of it as just another Trial; something confusing but ultimately harmless.

And maybe you die all over again.

OOC POST

IC Network Post: Scheduled January 31st
OOC Post: Scheduled January 25th
IC Log Post & TL Comments: Scheduled February 1st-8th

Tagline: Kidnappings, Potential Lab Assault/Investigation, Memory Traps

Summary: Donatello has been working on a method to send people back to their home dimensions for about two years (previous game & current game experience). He thinks he's finally figured it out (he hasn't). He needs data and he's decided not to ask permission to obtain it. He's going to try regardless, come hell or high water (and that will become everybody else's problem).

NOTE: The Memory Traps section is for general player involvement as desired, and doesn't require any coordination/sign-ups/etc. as it is a side-effect of what will occur during the player plot.

Kidnappings: Feb 1st - end of event (per player discretion). Sign-up details included within.

On January 31st, Donatello will post an anonymous network post asking questions about going home and interdimensional travel. Characters who respond confirming they've traveled to other dimensions before (whether it be their canon or CRAU from other games), or if a character has ever discussed having traveled between dimensions on an open network post, they will likely be on Donnie's list of people to kidnap, hold, and run a mostly harmless experiment on. If your character does not reply, and/or if you would like to handwave dimension-talk on the network to make them eligible, please just state in the sign-ups below!

A day or so after the Anon post goes up, your character may suddenly feel a sting on the back of their neck when they're walking around at night or somewhere deserted. Or perhaps they live alone, and they smell something sweet that makes them feel woozy. Maybe even your character is immune to sedatives or other knock-out drugs; maybe a quick, semi-harmless tazing will do! Whatever works to knock a character out with as little physical damage as possible, a drone will do its best to accomplish before bundling the character up in tarp and ropes and hauling it unsteadily off towards the farmlands in Willow.

Characters will awaken in holding cells lined up in Donnie's underground lab. They won't be particularly spacious but they're clean and reinforced for considerable above-human strength (but not indestructible). All sides save one of the cells are extremely thick and durable metal; the entryway is made up of hexagonal panels of purple light that seem almost more resilient than the metal walls.

Kidnapped characters will be held in relative comfort, with soft bedding and obfuscated sanitation facilities in each cell, fed and watered with reliable frequency by little purple drones seemingly made out of light (that easily shatter if assaulted), but otherwise don't have much interaction with their kidnapper. Occasionally one of the cameras in the corner of their cell will whir and occasionally a speaker in a cell wall will crackle to life in response to demands for answers, but characters are largely left alone to stew.

Except for the experiment. A procedure that Donnie doesn't anticipate causing lasting damage, but is likely uncomfortable, given that one-by-one characters will first be knocked out and then brought to a staging area where they'll be restrained in a chair next to a large metal structure that strongly resembles a Stargate (yes, that Stargate).

A construct made of bright purple light that looks like a robotic Donatello will be in the lab as well and will begin attaching various sensors. Nothing invasive; no insertion or pain, but a lot of connections to the forehead, base of the skull, and chest. The construct is capable of speech and will respond to questions; it sounds exactly like Donatello, and is extremely forthcoming with information. Maybe it even is Donatello, in some way.

Once the construct engages whatever machinery its fiddling with out of sight of the chair, a low, vibrating hum will engage and characters, depending on how they react to anything that probes or alters the soul may feel anything from a mild spiritual itching/discomfort to a pervasive, scratching ache. Think of it like the gradation of pain getting a tattoo; characters who are more spiritually powerful and/or are not spiritually inclined may hardly feel anything, whereas someone with a previously shattered soul might feel as if sharp claws are being dragged across their skin. The construct doesn't have the best bedside manner, but it clearly isn't there to bring characters any lasting harm and may stop the procedure if intense pain occurs (or is sufficiently faked).

Once the procedure is completed, characters will again be knocked out and will be returned to their cells for the duration of the event.

Escape is possible. There are ventilation shafts that lead outside, though they're too small for anything larger than a common housecat to fit in. Teleportation spells and like powers will work, but too much teleportation risks detection via energy signatures. There are dozens of purple light drones, purple light Donnie constructs, and physical purple turtle-like robots with various armaments patrolling every corner of the labs, including the vents. Constructs and robots will attempt to stop escapees with force, but will not use lethal force if escapees cannot be subdued.

If return escapees or any other characters try to break into the lab from the outside, however, all bets are off and lethal force is permitted.

IN SUMMARY:

⚛Characters will be kidnapped according to sign-ups/IC details
⚛Characters will be held in isolated cells for up to a week. Characters can talk to adjacent cells and are able to escape with planning/specific powers
⚛Re-entry into the labs after escape will be exceedingly difficult
⚛The Soul Data copying procedure is anywhere from mildly annoying to moderately painful
⚛Robots, drones, and constructs will not use lethal force for escapees, but will use lethal force for trespassers/returning escapees
⚛Donatello's voice will be delivered by various constructs and drones, but his original body cannot be found by either prisoners or escapees

TEXTBOX FOR KIDNAPPING SIGN-UPS:

Potential Lab Assault/Investigation: Feb 1st - Feb 8th

At some point after one of the following occurs, a huge dome of purple light will appear around the entirety of the land under which Donatello's lab sits:

  • An escapee manages to leave
  • Someone posts or mentions anywhere on the Network that they might think Donnie is responsible for any kidnapping(s)
  • Someone tries to break into the lab
  • February 8th comes to pass without any of the above taking place

The dome will be very noticable to anybody near Willow. The structure will act like the concept of 'hard light' structures in various sci-fi; it's like a near-transparent wall made out of purple light that is extremely difficult to break by conventional means. Powers that disrupt photonic light and extreme force can probably eliminate enough panels to allow people to enter.

After the dome erects around the lab, there will be even more patrols of light constructs, drones, and robots, and they will have no qualms with using lethal force. Constructs have all the abilities of the regular Donatello and will engage verbally with trespassers but are easier to destroy, and robots have intense firepower and durability but cannot be reasoned with.

Various bulkheads will also trap trespassers in singular rooms, which may or may not contain lethal traps such as poisonous gas, or even a good old-fashioned fire trap or descending/ascending spike walls.

The holding cells are far into the lab near the old manufacturing section. Cells are enclosed on all but one side by thick metal walls, with the entry blocked by light panels similar to the dome around the exterior of the lab. Enough concentrated force to a panel from both the interior and exterior simultaneously will cause it and the other panels to fail and will release the occupant.

Characters that manage to fight their way through all of the opposition both outside and inside of the labs, don't get caught and killed by traps or otherwise expelled by guards, and aren't waylaid by rescuing and releasing prisoners, might make their way to the staging area with the large ring structure sunk into a raised platform in the floor. The ring itself is obviously a massive and complex piece of technology, but nothing else in the room stands out. The platform beneath the ring hums with a near-constant buzz that almost feels like static.

The instant one or more characters make it into the staging area and near the ring, they will feel a tingle across their bodies that precludes a massive discharge of electricity, not unlike the hairs on one's arm raising before a lightning strike. Digits made out of purple light starting at 30 will appear within the ring's structure as the humming grows so loud it seems as if one's own insides are vibrating. The digits will begin counting down per second.

Characters who do not make it out of the room and seal the door shut before the countdown reaches 00 will instantly die. Maybe, just before they pass, they'll notice the gate is now pulsing a bright, brilliant white.

IN SUMMARY:

⚛Pending specific criteria, a giant dome of light will appear over farmland in Willow
⚛Inside the dome, any Star Children that have been kidnapped are being held captive
⚛There are security measures in place both outside and inside the lab to prevent entry. Some of these measures are lethal (robots, Donatello constructs, traps)
⚛The cells are the second deepest area in the lab
⚛Past the cells is a curious gate, which will execute its final program the moment the room is breached

Memory Traps: Feb 8th

And then, for some of you, no matter where you are, you're suddenly somewhere else.

Throughout Folkmore, as soon as the gate engages, pocket dimensions will tear open around Star Children reminiscent of Trial 18's escape rooms, only there's no trick to leaving and no instructions. These pocket dimensions were opened by Lavender, but as a means to contain the ill effects enacted upon Star Children by Donatello's gate rather than a test.

Within the pockets is an entire world generated by the memories of the host Star Child. It could be an exact duplicate of an entire city or a re-enactment of a months'-long journey, or it could be a kaleidoscope of the feelings associated with those feelings in a fever dream setting. Memories as they are associated with the soul are more malleable than those strictly from the mind, and can alter their surroundings within these pockets depending on how they affected the owner. The only caveat is that whatever the world, setting, or event must have already occurred to the host Star Child.

Nearby Star Children that are sucked into these pockets are not provided any instructions on how to get out...because they can't. Outside of the pockets, only a few seconds will pass, but within the pockets time moves differently. Star Children can feel as if they've been within the pockets for minutes, hours, days, even weeks with each other. Multiple different occurrences of the same or different events with different people take place, compartmentalized within these pockets in their infinite space and time.

It's up to the individual Star Child whether or not they realize that what they're experiencing isn't real...or at least, isn't lasting. Star Children who come to the conclusion that this is some sort of Trial or hallucination will find themselves returned to their bodies hale and whole, with nary a scratch. Other Star Children might not be so lucky; high-tension situations have a way of sticking to the most skeptical victims, after all. All this to say, essentially, wounds and deaths that occur within the pocket dimensions may be inflicted upon Star Children after they emerge. It's up to player discretion.

IN SUMMARY:

⚛Lavender will open pocket dimensions around Folkmore to contain the gate's effects
⚛The effects are, specifically, the creation of worlds/events that Star Children have already experienced; these worlds/events can be as accurate as the player likes, or can be exaggerated/muted in accordance with how it affected the Star Child in question
⚛Each pocket dimension will form around a host Star Child, and nearby Star Children will be pulled in against their will
⚛There is no specific goal in order to escape. Up to player discretion
⚛Time moves differently within the pockets; it could be a loop of thirty seconds or several weeks
⚛Wounds and lasting affects on Star Children after emerging from the pockets is up to player discretion

In the immediate aftermath of the gate engaging for those few seconds and the events of Memory Traps, all of the Donnie constructs and any other structures made up of the purple light will disappear. The lab will go silent, the robots will freeze in place before shutting down, and anyone still alive inside will be free to leave.

Top-level comments below for questions of specific sections! Please feel free to use this post to plot with others about different memories/worlds/etc!

A brief survey, for those who miss their loved ones or have loved ones who miss their own:

1. Do you have friends from other worlds who are now gone?

2. If you could return to your home dimension, would you?

3. Do you believe what you saw when you arrived, leaving your body behind like you're in a dream?

4. Have you ever traveled to another dimension, voluntarily or involuntarily? Any of them a 'hub world,' like this one?

5. If you had the means, would you leave right now?

Your participation could be the key to reuniting families torn apart. Please let your own judgment be your guide as to whether or not you'll answer; no further incentives can be offered.

Thank you.

The Lab (Donstantinople, Empire of Othello von Ryan)

Deep beneath the farmlands of Willow rests the den of what is, essentially, an invasive species.

Namely, it's the location of Donnie's super secret locked up tight need a BIG ol' password (and retinal scan and voice confirmation) very cool underground lab.

It begins with an underground entrance, wide enough for the Turtle Tank to squeeze through. This entrance, when closed, appears no different from the surrounding grazing fields. Maybe if someone is walking over it feeling for something specific, they'll notice a change in how the terrain feels beneath one's feet. It's just a few square meters in acres and acres of land, however, so only if someone knew where to look (and what to look for) would they find it.

Finding it is also one thing; getting inside is another. There doesn't seem to be any mechanism to open the hatch. Force doesn't seem to do much good; heavy machinery would be needed to pry this bad boy open, or you could be marked with one of Donnie's handy-dandy GPS trackers, which will detect approaching tracked individuals and open automatically. From there it's just a short walk down the ramp/driveway to the security bulkhead.

A digital display screen unfolds from a nearby concrete wall as overhead lighting clicks on at any approach. The display shows one command only: State your name, potential interloper.. If someone has difficulty reading the screen or is not sighted, don't worry; a robotic-sounding recording of Donnie's voice helpfully calls out, "State your name, potential interloper."

If the stated name is found to be satisfactory (see current access list) then, without warning, another device will unfold from the concrete wall. The display and Donnie's recorded voice both state: "Hold still for retinal scan. Failure to comply will result in entryway ejection."

(Entryway ejection also occurs if the guest is not on the approved list. Entryway ejection involves the driveway bay door opening and industrial fans lowering from the ceiling to literally blow the individual out of the entryway with hurricane-force gusts.)

The lab will not open at all if Donnie is not currently present inside. No screens will unfold, no annoying voices will issue commands. If someone tries to force entry to the main lab door when Donnie isn't present inside the lab regardless of GPS tracker status, they'll find it nearly impossible, again, without heavy machinery.

Provided the guest passes the rigorous security measures, they will bear witness to the bulkhead sliding open with two confetti cannons puffing purple confetti directly onto their head as Donnie's voice cheerfully rings out, Congratulations on gaining access to the greatest scientific achievement of the century. Touch nothing or face prompt demolecularization."

Looking around is probably fine.

The lab is absolutely massive. The floors, ceiling, and walls are all painted the same clinical white, giving the space the appearance of seeming even larger than it already is. Even without the optical illusions the floor plan is expansive. Several stations are plotted neatly around the open-floor lab, separated by both significant empty space (to avoid cross-contamination) and right-angled purple lines painted along the floors around them. The following stations can be easily noted, if not identified:

A standard chemistry station with various pieces of equipment, beakers, stands, burners, a small freezer and refrigerator, and various cabinets housing myriad accoutrements stands side-by-side with the analytical chemistry station:

The adjoining station has more delicate equipment for testing more complex compounds. It also has way more bottles and other containers marked with far more red and orange labels than the other station.

To the south of the chemistry stations is a large tooling & manufacturing area with equipment to cut and shape metals, plastics, and other materials. A metallurgical furnace sits apart, mounted upon a thick concrete pad and separated with metal railings.

In another corner stands an electrical testing station with multiple monitors and computer racks, as well as equipment for circuit work such as a small soldering station, an oscilloscope, and a signal generator. Tools are lined up neatly in the shelves above the desk.

Last but not least, in the furthest corner from the entrance stands what appears to be a cleanroom staging area but looks as though it is in the midst of remodeling. Panels and ducting sit nearby as if ready to be assembled, but there is a large platform that certainly would need to be moved to make room for tables and other furniture and equipment.

AS OF 11.20.2024, the staging area has been walled off with tape and tarps, the contents of which are obfuscated from view. A drone patrols the perimeter and will zap anyone who tries to sneak a peak without Donatello nearby and aware.

Folkmore App

★ Character Information ★
Character Name: Donatello Hamato
Character Age: 16
Character Species: Mutant humanoid turtle (softshell)
Current Health: Fit as a fiddle
Outfit: NAKED Example! Black wraps around legs and arms, partially around feet and hands, and purple mask that covers his head, tied in the back. Goggles on top of his head (infrared, syncs up with his wrist computer/ninpo tech). He will not have his belt and backpack-lookin' thing, since that's his battle shell and has built in weapons.

Character Canon: Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Rise of the TMNT for short)
Link to History: Link here, but this is more about his personality and abilities than his history. A quick summary below:

Like most iterations of the Ninja Turtles, Donatello, his three brothers, and their father Splinter live in the sewers of New York. However, unlike many of the other iterations, the turtles were purposefully created by a yokai warrior alchemist in an effort to combat the 'human threat' that drove yokai to live underground in the Hidden City. The experiment was botched and the turtles emerged prematurely when the lab was destroyed as Hamato Yoshi escaped, taking the baby turtles with him to protect them from a life of fighting and pain before succumbing to his own transformation. The turtles grow up without learning much by the way of ninjitsu, spending most of their lives dicking around and getting into all kinds of trouble. They fall back into the world of the mystic by accident to save their friend April and a magical creature called Mayhem, and slowly uncover the truths about their father, their origins, and their destiny along the way.

The Hamato family are particularly skilled in secret techniques that also seem a lot like magic that they call ninpo, which give them extraordinary abilities and the manipulation of various forms of mystic powers (more about Donnie's below). It's thanks to their combined strength and sheer determination to be themselves that they put down not one, but two world-ending threats in the form of the Shredder demon and the Krang invasion.

Canon Point: Post-movie
Canon Iteration: CRAU

Canon Iteration Explanation: CRAU - from Apocalypse How ([community profile] apocalypsehowcomm). Donnie spent almost a year in this world without any connection to his ninpo. His brother Leonardo arrived one month before he did, and they were the only two from their world in this place. Donnie struggled against limitations he hasn't had to in a while, such as an extreme lack of available resources that he can find and/or steal, and a different world with a different way of acquiring those resources. He also had a hard time with the supernatural Entities of that world, whose powers created supernatural environments and effects ranging from the absurd to the horrific. As a result of getting caught up in some of these instances Donnie is a little bit more ruthless/guarded with regards to getting his family to safety, but he's also gotten more accustomed to interacting with people of all walks and has worked on how to socialize with individuals a bit better. He's more or less the same to his original canon personality, but both a touch more traumatized and a touch more mature.

★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills:
  • Ninjitsu (hand-to-hand, bo staff)
  • Engineering (chemical, mechanical, electrical, computer, industrial, nuclear are the main ones with probably a passing in biomedical)(like, hella. think masters/doctorate-level, though only in things he finds interesting)
  • Math, science, self-appointed minor in theater
  • Prowess with driving/piloting myriad vehicles
  • Computer programming and advanced software development

Canon Abilities: Donnie has a few abilities tied to his physiology as a mutant; he can hold his breath for a very long time, is an excellent swimmer, has enhanced durability and reflexes, and accellerated healing and pain tolerance (he can't like regrow an arm, but a broken leg might take two weeks to heal as opposed to six). The turtles in this universe were engineered to be WMDs so he and his brothers can both take and deliver a good beating, though arguably Donnie's physical stats are the weakest of the four.
His biggest ability not tied directly to a 'learned skill' is his Ninpo, which is kind of like a magic people of his clan can perform; its potency varies depending on how connected spiritually/emotionally he feels to his family members. Don's particular powers manifest as his ability to build anything out of light/magic that he already knows how to construct by ordinary physical means, which is quite a bit. He uses this mostly to make various tech such as rockets, jetpacks, and extremely big huge guns. It can be very OP so I'm open to nerfing as determined. Even if his powers are OP tho, he usually doesn't have the will/connection to just go hog wild with them like his brothers do. Donnie has the hardest time connecting to his spiritual side since until very recently, it was all a bunch of ridiculous mumbo jumbo to him.

Role: Myth

Role Qualities/Attributes: His physical traits will manifest as a set of metallic-looking horns, all sharpened teeth, and glowing purple/pink eyes on darker sclera. These physical traits won't be constantly visible, but will appear as he uses his Ninpo and/or behaves in a particularly "Mythic" way.

As for abilities, Donnie's already got enhanced speed/strength thanks to his mutant physiology. Maybe just the ability to see in the dark, and a resistance to poisons/toxins.

Role Reasoning: The characteristics don't fit him perfectly (he's not really a sneaky/liar type), but he is very emotionally distant to most people, can be arrogant (and horrifically insecure simultaneously), inconsiderate, and sometimes borderline cruel. It's a common fandom joke that this iteration of Donnie is a bad day away from being a supervillain but it's legit not that far off base.

The whole 'reaching your full potential' thing will resonate VERY STRONGLY with Donnie, as he literally mentions wanting to do this in canon and even sometimes (jokingly) complains about his brothers stopping him from performing dubiously ethical experiments as stifling his creativity or potential. I would like to explore this in Folkmore and maybe have Donnie continue to struggle with achieving his own dreams VS being 'good' and sticking with his family. At Donnie's very, VERY center, he's a good boy, but honestly he does a bang up job of ignoring it for the sake of having fun and being Cash-Money.

★ Personality ★

Option 1. Summarize your character's personality in general and what their full potential would look like to them and what they would be willing to go through to meet that potential and what gaining that potential would mean to them. 400-800 word requirement.

  • INTELLIGENT DUMBASS - Probably the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of Donatello from any ninja turtles show is that he's the smart guy, the brainy one with the tech, the one who does advanced calculus for fun. This is all true, of course; if he were in normal society, Donnie would likely be on the fast track to NASA engineering at the tender age of twelve, but alas, he is a mutant turtle who has to live in the sewers. That just means that he can build and operate whatever he wants with impunity though, so maybe that's a good thing? And as for the 'dumbass' part, Donatello tends to take a 'hail mary' approach to his work, with an emphasis on style over function. Why would you make a gigantic earth-shattering drill effective against enemies when it is far cooler to just pose in front of it and then make it blow up?

  • DEDICATION - Never let it be said that Donatello doesn't know how to finish a job. Some people may even call it a hyper focus or an 'unhealthy lifestyle,' but those people have never overhauled a movie prop moon buggy into a gigantic turtle-shaped tank complete with like eight hundred weapons and a soft serve machine, so what do they know? That dedication extends to things he's not naturally good at, as well. When there's a problem before him of a more interpersonal nature Donnie's first instinct is to avoid it entirely or gloss it over in favor of something else, but when it comes to his loved ones he makes the effort. He talks about his feelings, which he HATES to do. He tries to see a problem from another angle to understand his brothers' concerns, despite that being the last thing he wants to do. He even practices and trains hard using his mystic powers, which falls firmly into the 'woo woo' magic/mystic category that he's not particularly fond of, if only because he wants the togetherness with his bros and wants to be helpful.

  • OVERCONFIDENT INSECURITY - So while he's fully aware that he's the smartest guy in the room and he won't have a problem acknowledging (read: bragging about) that, Donatello isn't without his own hangups. Sure, he's a tech genius, sure, he always knows what he's talking about, sure, his plans are obviously foolproof and the only reason his inventions blow up is because some component was of poor quality or something something excuses something... But what good is he if he can't keep doing what he does best- well, the best? Donnie canonically struggles with finding his worth amongst the team without his inventions and his tech, and desperately seeks the approval of the adults around him, scrabbling for the tiniest indication of praise. He may demand attention and gratitude for yet another cool thing he's invented that totally won't blow anybody up, foot stomps and dramatic hand gestures and all, but if someone genuinely thanked him? Offered him sincere recognition for his efforts? Donatello would probably cry.

  • STICKLER FOR PARTICULARS - The devils in the details, and so is Donatello. Specifically, Donatello likes everything to both have and be in its place. Words must be chosen carefully because definitions are specific. Objects to be used for their intended purpose. People, places, things, animals, and even concepts should be neatly categorized. He should be able to carry his phone to every corner of this earth and if you take it from him, he will burn down some houses. -that is to say, Donatello doesn't do well with change or with loose concepts and ideas. When things don't make sense he can get anywhere from mildly perturbed to absolutely unhinged.

  • GENEROUS, ACTUALLY - Donnie isn't particularly generous in the way people are used to. He won't give away his time or attention very freely, and he doesn't really try to engage in sympathy/empathy without extremely due cause. However, whenever Donnie is spending sleepless nights or long days working on something, odds are it's for the benefit of his family. He makes them gifts, he calls some of his most precious inventions "ours" when talking to his brothers. He slaves over a high-tech security system for their home to keep everyone safe. He upgrades his tech with the comfort or compatibility of others in mind (making a seat on his hovering battle shell for April, making manuals for his brothers for his other tech that they never read). This generosity doesn't usually extend to strangers or even acquaintances (and DEFINITELY not enemies or frenemies), but once you're in the circle, Donnie will risk it all for you.

DEMEANOUR: way of speaking that is at once dramatic and flat-toned; sometimes volume control problems; VERY very obviously does not like physical touch, never lets strangers touch his back, however if something interests him he will get in its face with no regard for personal space

LEO - POST MOVIE

[ nobody asks where april found the van. some mild criminal activity feels irrelevant in light of the day they just had anyway, and they couldn't exactly walk all the way back to the lair.

not with leo like...this. not just leo either; raphael couldn't hardly hold his head up, hunched and clearly wearing his 'i'm the eldest and i won't complain' face as he cradles leo so carefully on their way to the van. mikey's hands and arms won't stop trembling, even when he twists them together and presses them to his plastron. donatello is sore all over and his skin and shell feel raw, like someone rubbed him down with sandpaper.

and leo's quiet. leo's too quiet.

so there they are in the cargo van, raph tucked toward the front with a leg stretched out for mikey to use as a pillow to doze upon. april and casey sit up front, throwing concerned glances over their shoulders as often as is safe while april slowly weaves the vehicle through the half-destroyed streets toward the nearest access point. splinter sits near the doors as their only other capable fighter, though he keeps his tail curled around leo's uninjured ankle.

and donatello, he's stripping off his gloves because he's going to have to touch his brother to get a better idea of his injuries, and his skin doesn't feel like his own and that'll interfere with his judgement. the fewer layers between he and his brother, the more accurate he can be.

Alrighty Leon. Look alive, let's...let's diagnose.
